Everyone needs air to breathe and therefore to live. The air is increasingly contaminated and polluted by pollutants and odors due to the increasing, created by humans, technical influences. The natural, human odor warning system, the nose, can often detect these substances and trigger any necessary defensive actions.
By researching the psychophysiology of smelling, it has been found that through the limbic system in the brain – pleasant and unpleasant – fragrances trigger certain moods from euphoria to depression. The qualitative and quantitative assessment of the odors is basically subjective and therefore mostly different.
Pleasantly perceived odors exert an attraction on humans, which leads to the fact that the person develops the desire to stay there, where it smells pleasantly. Fragrances thus promote personal well-being and thereby also indirectly increase performance.
Odors that are caused by unpleasant, foul-smelling, sometimes even biting odors and pollutants, can lead to malaise, nausea and even dysfunction of the central nervous system in humans. Man will try according to a natural escape behavior to escape this smell as quickly as possible, even to prevent health hazards. However, some pollutants are harmful even in minimal concentrations, which often can not be perceived by the nose, so that the natural defense mechanism is not triggered.
To remove odors and pollutants from the air, there are several options:
- Neutralization, that means odor masking is the most well-known method in which odors are only seemingly eliminated by a deception of the odor nerves, however, as a fragrance clearly covers the odor. A danger arises from the associated elimination of the warning function of the nose, which can have a devastating effect even at low levels of air pollution with toxic substances.
- Filtering the air allows the retention of odors in special filters. Problems arise when the filters are too coarse for certain substances or are no longer fully functional due to supersaturation.
- Avoidance of odor generation can be achieved by chemical, microbiological or physical treatment of the surface or by action in reaction processes, as long as the odorants are triggered by a reaction. However, these processes are often very expensive, only partially effective and / or harmful to the environment, since the substances resulting from the reaction processes can not be readily disposed of.
